This expressive documentary explores the phenomenon of the fastest
trending alcohol spirit in the world, Tequila and Mezcal. This journey
takes us to the world’s most bio-diverse landscape of the agave
plant, Mexico; here families have been passing down the tradition of
distilling agave for generations, at times, even clandestinely. From the
alluring red highlands of Jalisco to the rugged mountains of Oaxaca the
film follows three producers: Carlos, Graciela, and Aquilino in this
burgeoning renaissance. From a bootstrap ambition to carrying on a
father’s legacy, their successes and sacrifices unfurl in this
interwoven story. Discover how one delicate plant can carry the weight
of a nation and the people trying to protect it for the future.

Join us for a celebration of Cuban cuisine, music and dance, featuring catering by Cali-N-Tito's and The National, live music by Beto Mendoza, and dancing with SalsAthens, as well as a visual art exhibit by U-Lead Athens Artists.
From the Executive Producers of JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI comes this unique
film about food, society and culture on the island of Cuba. After
a decade living in the United States, Asori Soto returns to his
homeland, exploring the present culinary landscape of his
homeland and providing a glimpse into what the future may hold. It is a
personal road trip adventure all around the island to discover the most
authentic tales behind the Cuban cuisine.
GUEST SPEAKER: Screening introduction by Dr. Melissa Perez Rhym, an Academic Support Specialist at Cedar
Shoals High School and Co-director of ULead Athens. The daughter of
Cuban immigrants, Melissa was raised in Miami, FL. and has lived in
Athens, GA for the last 15 years.

 | THE UNAFRAID
OCTOBER 13-14
U-Lead Athens presents a special encore of THE UNAFRAID,
an award-winning documentary portraying what it means to grow up both
American and un(der)documented in today’s United States. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with the two featured characters, Aldo and Alejandro, who both grew up in Athens and are leaders in and graduates of U-Lead Athens.
The event also includes a gallery exhibit by U-Lead Athens Artists, local students who are
immigrants or children of immigrants. This exhibit showcases their
outstanding artistic abilities in a variety of mediums including
pastels, charcoal, acrylic, and watercolor. Topics include portraits,
nature, and immigration experiences.
Sponsored by the UGA Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute, screening admission is FREE. Donations to U-Lead Athens Scholarship Fund are
welcome, and will help continue the non-profit's mission to get
academically qualified immigrant and children of immigrant students to
the colleges of their dreams.
