An original solo performance on personal mortality and the struggle to "live a physical life." In this irreverent survey on his personal life, Paolino explores the profane, tragic, comic and energetic tensions between physical/mental deterioration and the urge to live fully and experientially. The structure is time fragmented, jumping between past—present- future—present, past, in his quest to dunk a basketball at least Once in his Life!
RAY PAOLINO is an actor, director, writer and professor. He recently retired from UGA after twenty-eight years of teaching in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.
Ray forged his aesthetic in the 1970s in New York City, influenced by the works of the Manhattan Project, The Open Theatre, and the Wooster Group. He was the lead role in Israel Horovitz’s premiere of “Turnstyle,” at the Cubiculo Theatre. He also was the lead in “Midnight Mass,” for Theatre Matrix at the 52nd Street Theatre. He performed in Rip Torn’s production of “Hamlet” alongside Torn and Oscar Winner Geraldine Page at Sanctuary Theatre in Greenwich Village. Other productions include “The Sea,” and “The Corn is Green,” at Impossible Ragtime Theatre.
Since retiring, Ray has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and continues to write and perform. He remains physically active by biking, trout fishing, racquetball and working out at the Ramsey Center at UGA. He is an advocate for continued and dynamic physical exercise and encourages fellow seniors to remain active!
